Anyone have any insight into trends exhibited by those selected and those FOS'd. Curious what signals this last board sends by way of who gets promoted

Nothing really stood out to me this time. The list looked pretty equitable across the board, some above-zones that didn't surprise me and the in-zones seemed fair.

Three primary take-aways...
1) As per the precept, if you complete O5 Command, you make O6
2) If you don't screen for O5 Command and instead complete O5 XO, you get promoted
3) If neither 1 nor 2, then kick but as a DIWC and come out on the topside of the crunch

That's interesting, I always figured command at any/every level was important, didn't realize that it was a virtual guarantee to the next paygrade. I guess that makes sense.

Do you think the DIWC part means that the community values that as the most (or one of) valuable O-5 Milestones? That would actually be in line with the creation of the IWC O-6 CCSG billet being built up. I never got the impression it was a highly valued billet, but that was just guess work.

The command bit should be obvious. O-4 MS and O-4 leadership leads to O-5, and O-5 leadership leads to O-6. We're in the business of leading Sailors, so it makes sense that we promote those who've successfully demonstrated the ability to screen to those jobs and complete them successfully. I would hesitate, however, to assign any kind of priority to the DIWC jobs for promotion to O-6. I think they're important, but leadership is by far the main discriminator, and the fact that DIWC folks had to go to the crunch for selection means it's by no means a slam dunk.

My takeaway:
Leadership, early and often. MS jobs should be a stepping stone to leadership jobs. Make sure your paper makes it easy to admin screen you to those leadership jobs.

Also:
Have fun :) This gig we're all in is way more than a job. We need to make sure we're taking care of ourselves, our families, and our Sailors (not necessarily in that order).

Important to note that DIWC is no longer going to be an 1810-only job. Senior IW community CDR on staff will now get that distinction.

So what is the new job/job description for our CDR afloat MS job? When you find out, please let me know.

I know the new IWC positions are all-IWC jobs, but I was not tracking that DIWC was being changed from 1810 to all-IWC, as well. What's your source for that tidbit, if you don't mind my asking?

Source is my next (old) command. Haven't seen the official doc, but emails ref a CNIF instruction that establishes the IW afloat structure.

If I track down the instruction I'll post a link.

With the IWC being selected from all IW communities it makes sense that the DIWC would transition to that criteria as well. It would also indicate how IW Leadership views the importance of the DIWC position as well as the indication that DIWC will be a strong requirement for IWC (and O-6).

COMEVIL:
So, we are going to send O5s to sea in a DIWC billet when they aren't going to be the DIWC? Or are we not going to send those folks to sea at all, knowing we have tremendously important staff positions to fill? Either way, pretty clear statement on community perspective of DIWC, IFOR perspective of 1810 specific value in those roles.
