FY-17 Zone Message

I'm momentarily hijacking the thread:

I spent a while today looking for the document or website that says what the nominal cutoff date is for when boards pull everyone's records/info. I might have a cybersecurity certificate hit my academic record in late April/early May. It's like three weeks, right?

I don't know when they pull your record over to the board (a copy, really). If it isn't in your record today, I would mail it in. That guarantees it is available for the board members to review. At the same time, track it closely to ensure it hits your actual record (OPMF).

I would also offer that just because the cert is in your OMPF, it does not mean the board will see it. You want it reflected as a subspecialty code. To be sure, and due to short time, I would send it to the board with a letter. That ensures it is seen and acknowledged.

Thanks to both of you for the replies. I've worked closely with the PERS-45E and J folks lately, so I'm familiar with the process to update OMPF and get education properly accounted for in the record. I was curious about the board procedure(s), which I suppose really aren't that important at this point because of the timing. I'll also consider the letter and submission of the last minute certificate.

Thanks much!

Convening orders for O-4 Line Selection Board is up. It's a copy/paste from last year, including references to the IDC and the designator formerly known as Information Warfare. I recall a conversation about one of the past iterations of convening orders and how it was a lost opportunity to really define what we value in our officers. It looks like we lost yet another opportunity to define ourselves and the experiences we most value in a forum that will select our next crop of developing community leaders.

So.... no discussion here on this. The hypo blog is currently discussing generalists vs. specialists and HR endeavors (good blog posts, but the blog site doesn't jive well with DODIN networks). Is there a discussion somewhere else?

Displays well... I meant the lack of participation.

Lots of views...averaging more than 10k a month. Some comments, depending on topic.

Regarding Specialist vs Generalist, there is no doubt in my mind that we are specialists. Our Specialty is in Cryptologic Warfare, which entails SIGINT, Cyber, and EW. All three of those pillars are mutually supportive. While I could see us creating a 10 year career path (up until LCDR milestone) that focuses more on the other, we are already specialists.

I agree to a point.

We should be specialists in one of the core competencies and have bleed over into the others. That is why I prefer a hybrid model.

I think of a pilot. You are trained to be the very best f-18 pilot out there. Lots of training, lots of flight hours, etc, etc. And then, on your next assignment at "fill in the blank" staff, you are expected to be knowledgable not just on the f-18 but the air domain. Other platforms, air defense, etc.

We should be the same way...
