CYBER WARFARE ENGINEER ESTABLISHED

This forum is for discussions about cyber warfare

I'm seeing on other forums people who aren't selected for their primary designators getting letters in the mail saying they were pro rec'd into this program without even asking for it. This method of selection seems a little odd to me, since we're essentially telling some people they shouldn't apply (CTNs) and selecting individuals who were non-selects from their primary choices (SWO, aviation, etc).

CWEs will be assigned to Navy Cyber Warfare Development Group or NIOC Maryland and perform capability development. Additionally, CWE will continue to receive training in their craft throughout their MSR.

Of note, NROTC is about to be disestablished as a source for CWE. In lieu of the Cyber Option Scholarship Reservation (COSR) for NROTC midshipmen, a Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program (BDCP) option is being developed. So the two sources for CWE will be (a) Direct Commission Officer [DCO] and (b) BDCP. More to follow on that once the official word is out.

Since we're selecting so few applicants for commission, you can imagine that the competition is quite keen. Superior academic performance and relevant previous work experience in computer/software engineering [civilian and military] are distinguishing characteristics.

Based on your post above, my understanding is that applying to OCS as a post college civilian for CWE would not be an option. Is that correct?

CWE's are not commissioned through OCS. Instead, they are commissioned and sent to Officer Development School (ODS). Civilians who meet the eligibility requirements should see an officer recruiter, who will guide them through the application process.

Ah okay, my mistake IW OCM. I should have paid closer attention to the spec sheet for Cyber.

For Cyber Warfare, is the NAVY predominantly seeking candidates who are fresh out of college? Or is the pathway open to those who have the education, but also have experience and are therefore older than the traditional college graduate (22)?

Thank you

Moonpie,

The technical education is clearly a must. The prior work experience is desired, but not required.

For the Direct Commission Officer program, the strongest candidates will have superior academic credentials AND prior work experience, whether it be from the Fleet (in the case of Information Systems Technicians and Cryptologic Technicians [Network]) or from industry. Therefore, the DCO selectees could certainly be older than the traditional college graduate.

The other current accession source for Cyber Warfare Engineer is NROTC (which will transition to the Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program in the next few years). Since these officers will commission as CWEs upon graduation, they are more likely to be closer to the 22 year old age group.

Has there been any update regarding accession through BDCP?

The Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program (BDCP) is expected to come online in FY12 - with a couple quotas per year coming from that source. The other quotas (for a total of 5 per fiscal year) will come via the Direct Commission Officer Program. These will be the only two accession sources for Cyber Warfare Engineer.

IW OCM,

This is a publication document that I found via a Google search, which details the requirements for the Cyber Warfare Engineer program http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/publications/PAs/PA%20121%20MAY%202011.PDF

In the document, the only two degrees that are listed as applicable for the program are Computer Science and Computer Engineering. Would a masters or PhD in a similar discipline such as Information Systems or Information Technology suffice?

Thank you

@ Moonpie - I hate to say it depends, but it does somewhat - despite degree titles, degree programs tend to differ in the actual coursework, so the actual courses (and the applicants' academic performance) are what matter.

Based on the last couple rounds of applications, the applicants who had IST or Info Tech Management degrees simply did not have the technical bona fides or practical experience to be competitive. We're really looking for folks with computer engineering academic/work backgrounds (hence the CWE title).

ISTs can still apply if they think they have the requisite knowledge and abilities. They may find that they are better suited for one of the other Information Dominance communities.

Hope that helps.
