Enlisted can earn their dolphins but it is not possible for officers since you must be qualified to operate the nuclear plant first and only nuclear trained personnel can do this. I don't believe there is any path for an LDO to earn it either as Nuclear LDOs don't serve on submarines.

Unlike SWOs, submariners respect a DSO for his specialty and don't expect or desire you to drive the ship.

There is only one submarine in the Navy that will allow a DSO to earn his Dolphins provided that DSO is an LDO. That's only b/c they are gone ALL the time.

There are also VERY rare occurences when a sub will allow a DSO to earn their silver dolphins. There is nothing explicitly against it in regulations, but I've only seen it done once. Most COs won't allow a DSO to board for silver dolphins.

Deadlymonkey is right. I know of 4 subsurface DSO's (3 from NSGA/NIOC HI and 1 from NIOC GA) that have earned their silver dolphins. It takes the right scenerio (back to back trips on the same ship, accomadating CO, etc) and the right individual (humble enough to ask all the ship's company Sailors for assistance, can get along well enough with COB/EDMC, and can balance the qual with demanding work tempo)... but it is doable.

I was selected for IW on the June 09 Transfer/Redesignation board (Yay for me!). I'm an O-4 (O-5 board in FY 11) and was wondering how different my initial tour will be from that of an O-1.

Our very own New Accession Detailer (LT Mike Isaac) earned gold dolphins as a DSO while serving at NIOC MD. He is an LDO and he was gone a bunch...recommend you contact him to see how he was able to accomplish that very significant milestone.

So basically it is technically possible for a LDO to earn the gold pin and 1610's to earn the silver pin? Are there any cases of 1610's earning a pin? Thanks for the information all.

Here is the gouge (CAC enabled) on earning the Submarine Warfare Insignia, all variants (Line Officer, Supply Officer, and Enlisted), direct from the source:

The MILPERS specifically prohibits restricted line officers (non-LDO/CWO) from doing the gold dolphins. Any IWO who has them is an LDO.

I'm deployed on back to back to back trips right now and everyone on board keeps pushing me to start working on them... the training officer (an O-4) went so far as to dig into all the regulations/instructions to see if I was really eligible.

For non-nuclear trained individuals to earn the pin you need to be an LDO or a staff corps officer. Doesn't appear to be a way around those requirements for non-LDO IWOs according to how the instruction is written. The enlisted dolphin instruction also is pretty clear on who is and isn't eligible, and its pretty tenuous on whether an officer really can earn them. There are implications to an officer doing an enlisted pin that I wouldn't want to deal with on board a submarine on mission.

This almost seems like a case where IWO's should request an exception to the rule in general since all other officers on board subs have the ability to qualify some sort of dolphins (EDO, Supply, LDO, or Nukes). I wonder what type of push that would take and if it would be worth it...
