Changing Designator, 1665 to 1835/25

Changing Designator, 1665 to 1835/25

Postby bensmiata » Fri Aug 08, 2014 2:49 pm

Hello All,

I am currently thinking about changing my designator from 1665 (Strategic Sealift Officer, formerly Merchant Marine) to 1835/1825. I have an intel background, both in my civilian job and on ADT, but 1665 is a dying community if you don't sail...and I don't. I'm currently a LTJG and looking into the future promotion opportunities they seem better outside of my 1665 'community'. What is the change of designator process like? I just picked up a recall as a CANREC, and will be on these orders for 3-4 years. Will I be able to bounce back from this recall and promote to O-4 once it's over and I get an AT/ADT or two under my belt?

I appreciate all your help.

V/R,

Ben

The training process to become an qualified 1835 takes two years drilling or six months of active duty to attend the Intel Officer Basic course. The next hurdle is completing your IDWO qual. If your going to be an CANREC for the next 3+ years why don't you switch to Human Resources 1205. The LCDR boards are tougher each year and you won't be competitive as a senior LT or junior LCDR who hasn't become a fully qualified Intel and IDC officer.

I would add while you are on your CANREC tour you should consider applying for a transfer to the Full-Time Support (FTS) community and become a 1207 (FTS) Human Resources. They have a good program at NPS and you will be able to utilize the skills and connections you make during your CANREC tour.

I changed my designator from 183X INTEL to 182X IP in the Reserve. PM me for the gouge. Biggest hurdle is making sure the board will know that you will be successful as an IP (read: getting qualified).

Concur with OP on you considering HR officer. They actually do real work.
