CTT/CTM Merger

CTT/CTM Merger

Postby cookie41 » Tue May 22, 2012 7:49 pm

Does anyone have any details about if and when this will happen. I have heard rumors in the wind and I was just wondering if they are false, if its been shot down, if its going to happen or what. Please someone fill in the blanks for me.

If this happened I would chalk it up as the single worst decision made in rating merger history. Never going to happen.

In my opinion, we're still paying for the EW/CTT merger. I would say 75% of the CTT's that I've ever met introduced themselves as either a "straight stick EW" or a "straight stick T-brancher." The fact that we've merged those rates many years ago (over a decade, I think, but someone check me) and we still have such a divide in the rate is a testament to how terrible it was for the community.

I think we also merged CTM's into something for about 8months and then realized it was a terrible idea. They quickly went back to being what they were. I think they were merged with ET's. At least CTM/ET would make more sense than CTT/CTM...

...just my $.02

Unless there was another instance before my time, I think you're referring to the period where we were told CTMs were going away entirely, and many cross-rated to CTN, CTR, or IT. Then the Navy realized it was a horrible idea and stopped the rating closure.

The name may change from CTM but I recently heard CTMs would become responsible for maintenance across the IDC. A much larger responsibility not a lessor one.

Last I heard is that ONLY the maintenance aspect of CTT is being looked at (SLQ-32). Even better would be to include the Comms ETs into the rate, make the CTMs really IDC maintainers. CYBERFOR was leading the study.

I was strictly speaking from an Tech EW and CTM merger....from that point of view. I dont know if its going to happen, but merging those two rates and having them incharge of all IDC equiptment wouldnt be that bad. The cross-training for EW's to the crypto gear, and training the CTM's on Slq's.

I don't know if I agree with that... unless the big manning folks are willing to cough up 2-3 more CTMs per ship in the Navy to keep up with all that maintenance. The CTT techs who do all the SLQ maintenance are busy, and the CTMs are just as busy most of the time. I'm wondering if the folks pushing for this merger have looked at the MRCs for OT01 and OT02 recently.

I think a merger between CTM and ET is far more likely. A jersey change would theoretically allow the opportunity to keep the same number of folks onboard and may be able to alleviate sea/shore rotation issues.

I can't for the life of me see how CTT's and CTM's can merge. Two totally different skill sets. I wasn't a big fan of eliminating CTA's either. To this day, we take CTR's, CTT's, CTM's and CTN's to fill a good portion of our admin roles. As a prior "O-Brancher", the merge with IT somewhat made sense, though I wasn't a big fan of that either.
