IWO Role

There is no such question as a stupid question here. I call this forum "stupid questions" because then you can ask whatever you want and if someone says "That is a stupid question" then you know you put it in the right place.

IWO Role

Postby megsmegs » Tue May 12, 2015 6:00 am

Hello, I am trying to get an idea of how good of a fit a career as an IWO might be for me.

Probably by design, but I can’t seem to find any information on the specific hats IWOs have to wear. My understanding so far is that IWOs typically manage enlisted members who carry out all aspects of gathering/exploiting networks. So, I am trying to get an idea of whether IWOs always oversea the work of others to pass information to decision makers, or if there is some point where decisions become the responsibility of the IWO.

I am very interested in a position where I have the responsibility to make decisions that have significant impacts across computer and/or human organizations. For reference, I am trying to compare this to a civilian job, where I might make engineering decisions for a software platform people depend on.

Also, is assignment to a ship or sub typically the only way IWOs go out and “see the world”? Or do other sides of the operation engage in a lot of travel?

Forgive me for any ignorance, I am hearing all sorts of exciting bits and pieces about cyber teams and operations and I am just trying to put together what little I have learned.

Thanks again.

If you are looking to understand the IWO community as a whole I recommend you look at the full carreer path of an IWO; the best source for this is the SECNAV approved community brief located here (For IWO specifically, take a look at slides 30-31):
http://www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/b ... 0Brief.pdf

Here is a link to the Program Authorization (FEB 2013):
http://www.cnrc.navy.mil/publications/P ... C%20IW.pdf

There is also some general information similar to the Program Authorization about the IWO community located here:
https://www.navycs.com/officer/informat ... ficer.html

If you have specific questions please come back here and ask, and if you have specific questions about IWO roles on Cyber teams I can provide some specifics there as well as I am currenty serving on one.
